Why has the Swedish government kicked out the digital classroom and restored the traditional teaching program

Back in 2009, Sweden jumped headfirst into modernizing its schools by swapping out old-school textbooks for computers and other digital gear.
Fast forward fifteen years, it was recently reported that the Swedish government has moved away from digital classrooms and restored traditional teaching methods using books, pencils, and notebooks for several key reasons being:
Research shows that reading on screens (especially those with bright lights) can cause more eye strain and less focus compared to paper books. Plus, understanding what you read and remembering it takes a hit when you’re staring at screens.
To tackle these problems, Sweden’s putting 104 million euros into bringing books back into classrooms from 2022 to 2025. That’s a hefty chunk of change aimed at making sure every student eventually gets a paper textbook for each subject. The money will also go towards campaigns helping schools switch back to traditional ways of learning.

Concerns Over Excessive Screen Time:
Sweden has one of the highest internet usage rates in the EU, and there are concerns about the negative effects of excessive screen time on children's health and academic performance. One big complain has been how distracting digital devices can be. Lots of students get sidetracked by games or surfing the web during class instead of sticking to their studies. This screen obsession also raises flags about social skills and attention spans in school settings. Parents and teachers are pretty vocal about these issues; many parents worry about their kids using computers for things other than learning.
The Swedish Public Health Agency has recommended strict limits on screen time for children, which includes no screen time for toddlers under two and limited hours for older children.
This isn’t about removing digital tools altogether but they’ll use digital tools more wisely from now on.
Decline in Physical and Intellectual Capabilities:
Officials like Social Affairs and Public Health Minister Jakob Forssmed have noted a decline in physical and intellectual capabilities among students due to excessive digital device use. This includes reduced physical activity and skills such as cutting with scissors or climbing trees.
Improving Concentration and Academic Performance:
The government aims to improve student concentration and academic performance by reducing distractions from mobile phones. Studies have shown that mobile phones can significantly reduce student engagement and lead to lower educational outcomes.
Promoting Traditional Learning Skills:
There is a belief that traditional methods, such as handwriting and reading from printed books, enhance deeper engagement, critical thinking, and retention of information. This approach is seen as a way to ensure students develop foundational skills like writing and reading without relying heavily on digital tools.

While some argue for a complete removal of digital tools, others suggest a balanced approach, using technology where it enhances learning but not replacing traditional methods entirely; ensuring that students do not miss out on the benefits of traditional learning methods. This balance is crucial for ensuring students are prepared for a world where technology is omnipresent.

Sweden’s choice highlights how important it is to find balance in education--a takeaway that’s relevant worldwide as schools everywhere try to blend technology with solid educational foundations.
